Composition.

In my first week as a composer to picture, as opposed to a student studying composition, and already got four jobs. Sweet!!

Now I just need to find another job that actually pays well, whilst also leaving me time to be in band and do my freelance composition stuff.

…Well its a nice dream anyway.

Addicted to that second drop! Chilled vibes definitely help me power through this essay. Come tuesday, and the submission of my last ever essay, I can’t see many nights like this in the future. Thats slightly sad….

I don’t doubt i’ll ever be working to the wire in the future though, it’ll just be in Logic/Pro Tools rather than microsoft-goddamn-word!!

Dear Laptop Fan…

…you are currently making it very awkward for me to record quiet things. Would please kindly shut the hell up!

Thanks

I fucking love Coldplay. I know everyone says it, but those first tho albums are just so so good.

Mega Reich mood this evening. I love the blend between the train horn and the strings, its such a nice sound.

I still maintain that going to see Music For 18 Musicians in the royal festival hall, London, probably had the biggest influence on me musically. More than any other album, gig or artist anyway. I just love how his music draws you in; the detail in the rhythms, textures and harmony is just beautiful.

For those interested, heres my dissertation! A short collection of tracks written, recorded and produced by yours truly! The idea was to explore moving from different emotions. From intimate, to epic.

Its all due in tomorrow, so tonight shall be spent tidying up all the scores I’ve done for the songs. As well as the written report!

These tracks are all free to download, please to pass them around :)

Still one of my favourite things I’ve ever recorded. I’ve done a new version for uni thats much clearer, but I don’t think it captures the emotion in the way that this video does.

Uni Work.

I’m approaching the final stages of mixing my university dissertation, which is an 25min EP written and produced by myself. Despite the fact I’m horrendously sick of these songs, I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved. When I listen back to the shit I was writing/submitting in first year, its worlds apart. In both composition and production!

I’m not sure I’d ever promote myself as a solo artist. I guess I see myself as more of a composer, I think that gives me more freedom to do whatever the fuck I like! I’m currently doing an orchestral score for a nature documentary (for uni), writing pop music for my band and have also been asked to do some music/sound design for a short spaghetti-western-zombie student film this summer.

Since more and more people started going to university, and studying music/music tech, there has been an influx of student composers. People who will basically do you music for free 9/10 just so they can get their name out there. This makes it incredibly hard for the professional composers trying to make a living. To stand out from the pack you have to be bloody good. Not only at composing, but all the other shit like networking, emails, accounts etc.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that being a composer is about being a jack of all trades. Except that these days, you need to be a master of them all if you want to break through the pack.
